Kingsbridge Community Champions 2022
After a two year ‘hiatus’ due to Covid-19, the Kingsbridge Community Champions award is back to shine a spotlight on those working to strengthen the community in Kingsbridge. With your help Kingsbridge Town Council wants to recognise the people who go that “extra mile” and have made a positive impact in our town…and we need your nominations!! We are talking about all activity, big or small, from all kinds of people: a friend, work colleague, neighbour or volunteer.
We do not wish to be too prescriptive and the whole concept is for the Kingsbridge community to effectively elect their own Champions with as few rules and conditions involved as possible. How do you go about it? It’s simple, just complete a nomination form which can either be downloaded from the link below, pick one up from the Council Offices at Quay House, email reception@kingsbridge.gov.uk or call 01548.853296. Nomination forms will also be available from the Library, Kingsbridge Information Centre and a few shops in Fore Street. It will only take you a few minutes to complete your nomination for your Community Champion – let’s give local people the credit they deserve!
Deadline for applications is Friday 18th March 2022.

Kingsbridge Town Council – Councillor Vacancy
There is a current vacancy on Kingsbridge Town Council. A ‘casual vacancy’ was recently advertised but an election has not been called in North Ward and therefore it falls to current Town Councillors to select a new member. In local government language this is known as Co-option. The position is available up to May 2023 when the next local council elections will take place and therefore expressions of interest are now being invited.
Deep breath: applicants much be over 18 years of age; a British, Commonwealth or EU citizen; a Kingsbridge elector or have worked in the area for the preceding 12 months; or have occupied land or other premises as owner or tenant, or lived in the town or within 3 miles of Kingsbridge during the same period. Phew! No formal qualifications are required and the Town Council is made up of people from all walks of life with various personal and professional backgrounds. What you do need however, is a passion for Kingsbridge and a commitment to attend various meetings to make your voice heard. Being a Town Councillor is a big responsibility but incredibly rewarding.
People often ask: what do local councils do? Ultimately, it’s quite simple: the aim is to sustain Kingsbridge as a great place to live, work and play. The Town Council’s task is therefore to engage with the local community, to take on board the needs and wishes of residents, and to try, whenever and wherever it can, to make sure that something is done about them. If it’s not within the gift of the Town Council to directly help then hopefully it can support and lobby on behalf of local residents.
If you require any more information please speak to a current Town Councillor (details available at www.kingsbridge.gov.uk) or contact Martin Johnson, Town Clerk, via email clerk@kingsbridge.gov.uk or call 01548.857073. Application forms are available from the website or from the Council Offices at Quay House. If you are interested completed applications need to be submitted by latest 1200 noon Friday 3 December. It is likely that informal interviews will be held during the week beginning Monday 6 December.

Statement issued jointly by the Kingsbridge & District Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) and Kingsbridge Town Council.
In 2020, the traditional Remembrance Sunday parade and service at the Kingsbridge War Memorial was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Twelve months later and restrictions on meeting people outdoors have been lifted. However, it is still possible to catch and spread Covid-19 even if you are fully vaccinated. Covid-19 will be a feature of our lives for the foreseeable future so we need to manage the risk of infection to ourselves and others. Therefore, and taking stock of the recent surge in cases, a decision has been taken to moderate the Kingsbridge Remembrance Sunday event on 14th November with no parade, no band and no involvement from community groups as the safeguarding of local people is paramount.
However, a short service will still take place at the War Memorial on Embankment Road for around 15 minutes duration only:
- 10.45 a.m. attendees to arrive at the War Memorial
- A road closure will be in force to reduce background noise (and enable people to actually stand in the road)
- Introduction and prayer by Reverend Jackie Taylor, RBL Chaplain
- Exhortation by the President of the RBL
- Boom
- Last post via PA system
- 11.00 a.m. Two minutes silence
- Boom
- Reveille via PA system
- Single wreath laid by the RBL and Town Mayor on behalf of the whole Kingsbridge community, churches and associations
- Words and prayers by Reverend Taylor
- Kohima by RBL
- Benediction by Reverend Taylor
In summary, while the above will be a much reduced Remembrance Sunday event, for the reasons provided, it will be sustained as a meaningful commemoration for the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community and civilians from Britain and the Commonwealth.
Thank you for your understanding.
