The Kingsbridge community is urged to prepare early and be aware of the dangers of flood water. High spring tides are forecast over a 7 day period. Should the tides combine with either heavy rainfall, high winds and/or low barometric pressure there is much potential for a tidal surge from the head of the estuary.
Local residents and businesses are advised to consider positioning sand bags at their properties throughout and move valuables and stock to upper floors. The Town Council has a stockpile of sandbags for you – please telephone 01548.853296 or drop into the Council Offices at Quay House which are open 9.30am to 1pm.
Pedestrians should avoid flood water at all times and be aware that it is very likely to bring raw sewage to the surface. Please plan your day ahead and make your shopping trips accordingly.
Motorists are strongly requested to make detours around the flooding e.g. school runs. Bridge Street, Mill Street and Ilbert Road are very likely to be closed during substantial flooding. Motorists who drive into flood water are taking unnecessary risks with their own safety.
Finally please listen to weather reports on local television and Radio Devon to keep well informed as the weather situation can change rapidly. Advice on what to do before, during and after flooding is available on the Environment Agency website or by calling Floodline on 0345 988 1188.
Hopefully the high tides will pass without any problems
– but it’s always wise to be prepared.
