Being prepared for emergencies isn’t about expecting the worst, it’s about taking a few simple steps to help keep you, your family and your community safe.

Emergencies can happen at any time. Sometimes they occur with little or no warning, while others, such as heavy rainfall, rising river levels or severe winter weather, may give us time to prepare. While some situations may cause only minor disruption, others can pose a risk to our safety and wellbeing.

With winter approaching, now is a good time to think about how you would respond to an emergency and the steps you can take to be ready. A little preparation can make a real difference, helping you feel more confident and better equipped to manage unexpected situations.

The good news is that preparing doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. Many simple actions take just a few minutes and can help you prepare for a range of emergencies. Even if you can’t do everything, taking a few practical steps now can help reduce disruption and make it easier to recover afterwards.

Knowing what to do, where to go and who to contact for help can provide reassurance when it matters most. Being prepared may also mean you’re better placed to support neighbours, friends or family members who might need extra help.

Take a moment to read Devon County Council’s ‘Be Prepared’ newsletter via the link below. It offers useful advice and practical steps to help you plan ahead. While it can’t cover every eventuality, it’s a great starting point and worth sharing with others to help everyone feel more prepared.
